2020 Houston Open Preview

Houston Open

October 5 – October 8

Memorial Park Golf Course | Houston, TX

Par 70 – 7,432 Yards

Brian Gay beat out Wyndham Clark in a playoff at the Bermuda Championship to win at 15-under last week.  Rounding out the top 5 were Ollie Schniederjans (-13), Denny McCarthy (-12), Stewart Cink (-12), Matt Jones (-12), and Doc Redman (-4).

We won’t have much course history to go on this week as the Houston Open will be held at newly renovated Memorial Park Golf Course. Brooks Koepka (+2000) was a consultant for the redesign so I’m sure he’s played his fair share of golf here (and maybe ready to go with the Masters next week).  Favorite this week is Dustin Johnson (+800) followed by Tyrrell Hatton (+1600), Hideki Matsuyama (+2000), Tony Finau (+2000), Russell Henley (+2200) and Scottie Scheffler (+2200).

Other notables in the field: Viktor Hovland (+2500), Sungjae Im (2800), Jason Day (+4000), Jordan Spieth (+5000) and Sergio Garcia (+5000).

Par 3’s: 167, 216, 202, 237, 155

Par 4’s: 522, 490, 440, 443, 456, 496, 406, 529, 382, 503

Par 5’s: 587, 625, 576

There are a couple longer par 4’s this week and ten overall, so Par 4 scoring will be a factor at the Houston Open.  There are just three par 5’s, but par 5 scoring is always important as they provide the most opportunities. Other than that we’ve got five par 3’s with three over 200 yards.

SG Tee and SG Approach (ball striking) is a key stat every week, especially at a course where we don’t have much data to support something else.  To go along with the par 4’s, birdie or better scoring across the board should stay in the mix.

It’s a municipal course so they won’t be the fastest greens or toughest rough. Finding a hot putter who’s good around the greens could separate the leaderboard this week.
