2020 WGC-Mexico Championship
Feb 20th-23rd
Club de Golf Chapultepec Naucalpan de Juarez, Mexico
Par 71 – 7345 Yards | Poa Greens
This week we’re headed to Mexico for a World Golf Championship event. This tournament used to be held at Doral in Florida from 2007-2016 but was moved to Mexico in 2017.
The WGC-Mexico is a no cut event with 72 players invited based on official world golf ranking (OWGR), FedEx Cup points, Euro Tour ranking and two players each from the Asian, Japan, Australasia and Sunshine tours. Unfortunately, 4 of the top 10 in the world will not be attending the event, including Tiger, Brooks Koepka, Patrick Cantlay and Justin Rose. We still have a strong field of players so should make for a fun week with Rory, DJ, JT, Adam Scott and Webb Simpson leading the way. Check out our WGC-Mexico Bets and DFS Picks here and Tee Times and Tournament Updates here.
The Club de Golf Chapultepec Course Layout
Par 3s: 186, 235, 225, 172
Par 4s: 316, 387, 506, 445, 525, 382, 450, 406, 497, 403, 388
Par 5s: 625, 622, 575
At elevation (7600ft), this course adds another challenge as distances can increase anywhere from 10-15% making caddie’s really earn their pay. This may lead to players using 3 and 5 woods off the tee more often than usual. The fairways are tight so accuracy off the tee is a must and changes in elevation on each hole add to the distance calculation challenges. In past years, winners have scrambled very well making this a key stat to look into. But as always, approach game (a little shorter than usual in the under 125 yard range) will be the biggest factor in finishing on top.
Holes 8 (525 yd par 4), 7 (235 yd par 3)and 13 (225 rd par 3) have played the hardest over the last three years while holes 15 (575 yd par 5), 11 (622 yd par 5), and 1 (316 rd par 4) feature the most scoring.
The first hole is a downhill par 4 reachable for a lot of the players who want to get off to a hot start. It features two greens that are used throughout the week making it a little unique (may have seen some of these on the Asian Tour this year). The second hole is also a reachable par 4 so look for the field to get off to a quick start.
The first two, longer par 5s are mostly unreachable in 2 which means we’re not going to see a ton of eagles this week and players are probably as likely to eagle the par 4s as the par 5s as seen below from JT(415 yards!!).
As noted above, a couple par 3s play long and tough but players will still be hitting a lot of wedges from the 100-150 range so we’ll focus on that stat when our picks come out along with driving accuracy.
