Sunday at the Genesis Open

Heading into Sunday we’ve got one of the best looking leaderboards we’ve seen all year. Rory, Scott and Kuch are tied at -10 as no one was able to separate themselves from the field Saturday. Aside from the top three, anyone with in four shots of the leaders you’d think would still have a shot today. This includes big names like Dustin Johnson (-8), Jon Rahm (-6), Hideki Matsuyama (-6) and Bryson DeChambeau (-6). Let’s take a look at the rest of the leaderboard and their live winner odds.

  • T1. Rory (+190) | Scott (+400) | Kuch (+600) -10
  • 4. Henley -9 (+1600)
  • T5. DJ (+700) | Varner (+1600) | Dahmen (+3300) -8
  • T8. Homa (+4000) | Kang (+6600) | Gooch (+10000) -7
  • T11. Rahm (+3300) | Deki (+4000) | Bryson (+6600) | List (+15000) | Clark (+20000) | Brown (+25000) -6

The obvious pick here is Rory. He’s been playing on a different level for months which is why he opened as the favorite going into the week. He closed out the day with a great up and down to remain co-leader.

Next up is Kuch. If his putter stays on fire he’ll be there to the last hole. For a course that gives longer hitters an advantage, Kuchar has had no issues. Looking for his 10th win, he’s as good a bet as any.

Adam Scott loves this course. He’s leading the field in GIR at 74% and hopes to continue that going forward. He’s been putting as well as Kuchar this week and has a great track record at Riviera.

Sorry Henley but just not sure you can hang. Next.

Rahm, Matsuyama and Dechambeau seems like the good plays here as they provide a lot of value and can go as low as anyone.

But, can’t go against Rory as a co-leader heading into Sunday. He pulls away early and closes it out.

Long Shot
Bryson at +6600 seems like the most likely guy to go low and steal the W. And then there’s Koepka….

Genesis Invitational: Entering the Weekend

The cut line bounced back and forth between E and +1 all day Friday but settled at +1 and now 68 golfers enter the weekend chasing Matt Kuchar at -9. Justin Thomas, Bubba Watson, Jason Day, and Phil Mickelson headline the list of golfers who missed the cut this week. Many of the young guns struggled as well as Im, Niemann, Wolff and Champ all missed the cut as well. Birdies have been tough to come by with only five holes playing under par (1,3,10,11,17).

GolferDay 1/Day 3Thurs & Friday Results
Matt Kuchar+6600 | +450Kuchar is dialed in with his putter. After jumping out to a big lead on day 1 he followed it up shooting -2 on Friday to enter the weekend with a two stroke lead on the field. Kuch isn’t a bomber so he’ll need to keep putting well if he wants to go wire to wire at Riv.
Rory McIlroy+700 | +240The tournament favorite is only two shots back and looks ready to make a move on Saturday. If you weren’t buying in at +700 then +240 on Saturday doesn’t look any better. Rory’s number hasn’t gotten any better since the tournament started and likely won’t. Rory’s in a great position to come away with a win on Sunday.
Harold Varner+30000 | +2200Riviera is much less difficult when you can hit fairways and that’s what Varner is doing. Looking as good as he has since the first three days at Bethpage last year, Varner’s got a shot this weekend. I’m a Varner fan but it’ll be tough going head to head with Rory on Saturday.
Adam Scott+2800 | +1000After a slow start, Adam Scott shot a 64 on Friday to climb up the leaderboard. Now only 3 shots off the lead and a shot out of second, I like his chances going into the weekend. If anyone will be able to stop Rory this weekend, it’s Scott.
Jon Rahm+1200 | +1400Rahm’s been okay over the first two days of the tournament but hasn’t been able to break away from the middle of the pack. He is still very much in play this weekend if he can sink a few more putts.
Tiger Woods+1600 | +15000If anyone can do it Tiger can right? At +15000 why not?
Brooks Koepka+2200 | +20000Brooks had an up and down Friday shooting +4 on the par 3’s and -3 on the par 5’s. He’s putted pretty well this week and looked poised to make a push with three straight birdies after he made the turn on Friday. Unfortunately he followed that up with two bogeys and a double on 18 that will be tough to overcome with the way the course is playing. If you’re going to give me +20000 odds on Brooks seven shots out of second, I’ll light a few bucks on fire.

Still very much in play at -4
Dustin Johnson +1400 | Justin Rose +3300 | Bryson DeChambeau +3300

What the People are Saying About the Field at the Genesis Open

The Elite: Rory +800, Rahm +1000, JT +1000
No matter who you’re listening to this week, cases can be made for each of the these three. I’m not sure if it’s the cheaper price in DFS or an impressive Sunday at the Waste Management Open but Justin Thomas came out as the people’s choice out of the top three.
Justin Thomas +1000 | Rory McIlroy +800 | Jon Rahm +1000

The Next Tier
If you haven’t heard it yet, Bubba Watson wins at Riviera every other year and he didn’t win last year. The stats agree Bubba is a great play here, he’s playing at a high level right now and should be highly owned in DFS this week. Dustin Johnson’s course history and recent success are also reasons he was a popular pick among many top analysts this week. Patrick Cantlay, Justin Rose and Adam Scott also were popular golfers across podcasts this week.
Popular fades in this group: Tiger Woods | Brooks Koepka

The Next Tier
Marc Leishman and Patrick Reed seemed to get the most love. Leishman has good course history and is coming off a win at the Farmers while Reed has been up and down lately with a second and sixth place finish as well as two missed cuts. He hasn’t played Riviera since 2017 but if he’s playing well, he can compete with the top of this field on Sunday. Paul Casey, Abraham Ancer and Collin Morikawa are other popular choices in this range.
Popular fades in this group: Jason Day | Bryson DeChambeau
