Waste Management: Entering the Weekend
The cut line moved to -1 at the end of the day yesterday and the top 67 golfers are moving to the weekend. Tournament odds look much different as we move into day 3 of the Waste Management Phoenix Open.
Golfer | Day 1/Day 3 | Thurs & Friday Results |
---|---|---|
Jon Rahm | +650 | +1100 | Currently T12 at -7, Rahm had a tough end to Friday bogeying 16 and 18 to end his day. Ranking towards the top of the field in GIR (13th) and PP GIR (6th) at the midway point, his “weakness” so far has been his accuracy off the tee. He did look dialed in on the back 9 yesterday with 5 straight birdies from holes 11 to 15 but was visibly disappointed after his bogey on 18. Rahm’s putting well enough to win the tournament if he can clean up his issues off the tee, I didn’t like him at +650 but +1100 is much more enticing. Rahm wants this one and I’m buying. |
Xander Schauffele | +1800 | +1400 | Currently T8 at -8, Xander’s played pretty well over the first two days. He’s been long off the tee (11) but less impressive in GIR (18) and PP GIR (34). Xander had a solid day 1 (-4) with 5 birdies and 1 bogey, but a rough start to day 2 bogeying 3 of the first 5 holes. He finished strong with 7 birdies on the last 11 holes putting him in good position to make a move this weekend. If J.B. Holmes cools off this weekend, Sunday could come down to a showdown between Xander and Rahm. I’m buying some Xander this weekend too. |
J.B. Holmes | +10000 | +300 | Currently at the top of the leaderboard at -13, JB is rolling right now. With +10000 odds at the beginning of the tournament, not many expected to see Holmes’ name in the last group on Saturday. Holmes is putting great but ranks outside of the Top 40 in GIR for the first two days of the tournement. Holmes played well last week at the Farmers, ranking in the top 10 in both GIR and PP GIR, but shot even par over the weekend resulting in a T16 at -7. I’m expecting him to cool off again this weekend and fall outside of the top 5. |
Wyndham Clark | +30000 | +900 | Currently #2 on the leaderboard at -12, Clark shocked everyone late on Thursday shooting a 61. He followed up his impressive opening round with a -2 on Friday needing birdies on the final two holes to get under par for his second round. Clark came back down to earth on Friday and I expect that trend to continue through the weekend. If you took Clark Top 20 at +700 I’d feel good, with so many big names still in contention heading into the weekend, it may be tough for Clark to finish inside the Top 10. |
Billy Horschel | +8000 | +800 | Currently T3 at -11, Billy followed up his bogey free 63 in round 1 with a solid round of 68 on Friday. Billy’s got two eagles this week both on the par 5 3rd hole. He’s been outside of the top 30 in driving stats and GIR but made up for it with his putting. Horschel fell apart last Saturday at the Farmers with 8 bogeys and no birdies. I want to see Horschel play well the rest of the weekend but the numbers just don’t seem to suggest that. A top 20 finish is possible but may be the ceiling for Billy this weekend. |
Byeong Hun An | +6600 | +800 | Currently T3 at -11, Hun An is playing some great golf this weekend. A lot of people were on Hun An this week and he’s bounced back nicely after a difficult few days at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines. Hun An is long off the tee making the course in Phoenix a great fit for his game. He ranks 3rd in GIR over the first two days of the tournament making up for his struggles with his putter. He has yet to shoot a bogey in the tournament and is -10 on the back 9 this week. There is a lot to like about how Hun An is playing right now and his history at the course suggests he can continue his stellar play into the weekend. I like Hun An this weekend to finish top 5 and maybe even win the tournament. Unfortunately when the odds go from +6600 to +800, I’ve got to accept I missed out on him this week. He burned me at the Farmers and American Express, I should have hung on for one more week. |
